Matt Hoile

Matt’s paintings are inspired by the dynamic effects of light and atmosphere. He works primarily in oils, both outdoors on location and in his studio. 

“I try to depict a sense of place and really capture the essence of the subject. Controlling the tonal values and capturing the light effect is the challenge that motivates me to paint.” 

Matt takes an intuitive and painterly approach, combined with a commitment to the traditional and technical aspects of drawing and painting. 

“The artists which I most admire have combined their natural talent with a dedication to continually develop their skills. Good paintings appear effortless but demonstrate an underlying mastery of technique and understanding of values, colour and paint application. I am always looking to capture the moment with a degree of accuracy, but photo-realistic pieces do not inspire me. My view is that a painting should not simply show an accurate likeness, but represent the artist’s empathetic understanding of the subject.” 

Matt is a member of The Rational Painters and The Devon Artist Network. He has exhibited with The South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts and Exeter Open Studios.
