Jayne Farleigh

This summer, one of Jayne Farleigh’s street scene paintings was accepted by the SWA for sale in their annual show in the Mall Galleries, London.

Jayne lives locally and we have sold many of her paintings capturing the unique light of the Exe estuary in Topsham. This is a painting of Princesshay Exeter, and we have the print for sale in artenax.

This is a little insight into what made Jayne paint this:

“Last year a splendid installation of brightly coloured umbrellas hung above Princesshay shopping centre in Exeter under the glass canopies.

I like the shadows that they cast on the ground, mingled with a blue reflection from the glass. The shop window on the left reflects the scene before me with the umbrellas at the highest point. Shoppers gather and chat, or sit at benches.

I think about shopping areas and how they are changing.They are another social space that is under threat of existence as shopping moves over to the internet.

A lady in red approaches. The man in the foreground can’t help but glance her way as she flicks her hair in the stream of sunlight.

There is a little statue on the building on the right in the distance (it looks cream).This often goes unnoticed. I like to paint statues as they are like silent observers. I think of the buildings this way as well. They are likely to remain while everything else changes. “
